Progression 2 exercise #1 the word- picture

                                     Little girls in pageant shows

The image that I choose was about a little girl that siting in a chair with a big dress about the age of four and her mom is doing her make up. This little girl is getting prepared to come out in a pageant show, but she doesn’t seem to be enjoying it at all. For a pageant show its allot of work and dedication form both the parents and kids. At times mothers do take it to far and forget its not them that going through the hours of makeup, tanning, practicing etc. There are benefits in being in a pageant show but if there is not right balance with both the parents and the children’s dedication and priorities then it’s all is wrong. Like in everything there is positives and negatives for little girls being in a pageant show.
A part of childhood for everyone is being able to look back at all the great times you had with your friends playing in school, with play doh, blocks, dolls, and so on. In most cases mothers don’t even have their daughters in schools.  Some are home schooled so that means little interactions with other children. In the picture you see how some mothers can take it to the extreme of making their daughters put make up, fake teeth (flappers), fake eyelashes, tanning etc. Some little girls don’t enjoy sitting for hours while their hair is being pulled one side to another with a can of hairspray just so they can look like dolls. In reality they are little girls that are just placed under so much pressure to win or get their performance right because the pressure they feel. They push the appearance so much that these little girls grow up thinking in life you’re viewed only by appearance. Some clothing is way to provocative and unacceptable. Sometimes kids need to be kids.
With negatives come some positives in being a part of these pageant shows. Being In a pageant show can boost little girl’s self-confidence if they are feeling low on their self-esteem and they win, it can make a big difference. They come out of their shells and interact with strangers. So if they’re ever in a situation where there out it would be easier for them to meet other kids.  Pageant shows pushes them and teaches them about imagination, and creativity at a young age. With all the different categories they have to change from costumes, to swimsuits, to casual, to sports it allows them to use their creativity in dressing up. Pageant shows can bring out the talents that they may have. There are fun activities that are in the pageant show so allows them to have some fun. The reason they place their daughters in these pageant shows it’s to win money. Some mothers put that towards their college education for the future. It teaches the little girls about hard work that comes with anything you do in life.
My opinion of this picture is that if the little girl is not enjoying being a part of the process of the pageant show then she shouldn’t have her do it. There are great things that come out of being a part of a pageant show as long as the parents don’t get out of hand and push their children to an extreme that their children don’t want to do.  Parents need to make sure that everything in their life is well balanced and not just because they are in a pageant show they have to dedicate it all to it. Kids need to be able to enjoy their childhood and know the importance of inner knowledge not just the outside appearance.
Over all a pageant show puts both parents and girls in a situation that hard because they are viewed in every little aspect. Mothers need to make sure they are not making their daughters grow up to quick or see other girls lower then them only because they didn’t win. Mothers need to make sure they remember how old there daughter is and that’s it’s the daughter who has to go through the hours of pain when they do their hair and extensive hours of make up and practicing. The determination should really come out of the daughters because at the end of the day it is them that are in the pageant show not the mothers. Mothers need to know when to draw the line and sit back. Need to learn when it is ok to push their daughters for them to perform better. Make sure that they encourage them more then anything even if they loose so it teaches them its not only about winning but the experience. If your daughter is crying when you do her make up or fuse about any thing then think that’s a red flag to not take it to far and serious. With the right balance comes the right outcome.

Exercise #3

                                                EXERCISE# 3
In the poem “ It’s a Woman’s World” by Eavan Boland there was allot of unclear words and lines. As I read through the poem carefully and began to break each stanza down as a class and on my own it was clearer of what the poem was about.  In lines one through eight, it talks about how we have come long way from the way we use to sharpen a knife. How technology is getting better, and how life is changing with it. Life overall it taken a different route with all the new items because of technology but yet women don’t seem to change with time.  In lines nine through eleven it talks about important days that women live, but in reality they don’t have much to look back at and see different then another women because they are all the same, their life’s don’t change.  In lines twelve through twenty it talks about how women are not getting appreciated enough for all the things they do for us. Instead everyone views everything that women do as a obligation to them, something that is natural in the home aspect for women to wash, cook and pick up after us. We remember the little things they forget to do instead of all the times they have done it all for us. In lines twenty- one through twenty- three it says women will never be a chance taker, they will never put themselves in a situation that takes risks. Women will keep them selves in a safe zone instead of changing their own lives for a better life.  In lines twenty-four through lines thirty-six it talks about how women are never there to witness of a part of anything in society because there life revolves all about being at home and making sure their role as a wife is getting done, So there fore as things are happening in the world  they can not be blamed for it or questioned about it because women in reality are not part of society. In lines thirty-seven through forty it talks about how children are outside perhaps playing and when its dark outside there are able to see the light in their homes so that indicates them to go inside. In lines forty-one to through forty- four it talks about how women are not making history that’s to my believe, I really didn’t understand those lines. Women forget about themselves because they are more like a robot that does the same thing over and over that sometimes they need to be reassured there still human and beautiful, that’s how I interpreted lines forty-five to forty- six. In lines forty- seven through fifty-five is talking about a women she sees, that is looking up towards the sky. It was cold outside and she saw that air was coming out of her mouth but it wasn’t because she was a fire-eater or anyone special that took chances just her neighbor, another women that was a housewife like her.

exercise # 2

Exercise #2

Dear Evan Boland,
Your poem has really made an impact and made me realize that society put downs have been happening throughout years and things have not token a complete turn for a better life for all.  Racism, gender, life styles, the way you dress is what we all are judged on and put down for. It just seems that it comes natural to people to put others down. They do not think, but yet they’re quick to judge a book by its cover. Even though the poem specifies how women have been a part of society negativity I was able to connect it to my life. In my life I have witnessed my own mother be that women that is not a fire-eater, not a chance taker. My mother is what you call the “typical house wife” and how Eavan Boland says “getting the recipe for a good soup to appetize our gossip.” My mother has gone through allot of challenges in life that she had to face in her marriage with my father. She has suffered through heartbreaks, cheating, lying, living without trust, no emotional support etc. So sad to watch as I was growing up my father not being around for much support, but yet my mother never took a chance to leave him. She swallows the pain still to this day of all the misery she has faced. My mother never had the courage and I guess enough respect for her self and us to leave.  Her excuse has always been I don’t work where would we go and he is changing. Growing up I always have had to work hard for what ever it was that I wanted nothing was handed to me. What ever I own it is because of me, I have always worked since I was younger. I admit it I love to shop and spoil my self, my weakness is purses, heels, and clothes. I see it as I work hard for a reason; it is to get what ever I desire. Other people will be quick to judge me and say, “ look at her she so spoiled, she so coincided, she must be a party girl because she knows everyone, she is so not a “A” student.” No! how about next time you judge me ask me where I work, how I get all I own, and how is it I know so many people, and what my grades are before you judge me. How I say you cannot judge any one unless you have lived their life. There is a reason to answer to everything and don’t put no one in to a specific category because there a “ pretty girl”, race, etc. In line 45 of the poem it says “ But appearances still reassure “I also have experienced getting a job in a restaurant because of my appearance, I had a boss that would manage to always hire girls, we were all young, pretty, fit, and under the age of 20. Every time we would ask him to hire guys because the food trays would get heavier and we would have trouble carrying the trays full of big food plates, he would say yeah” I don’t know, I need to get that approval of the head of the Jewish home to hire more people.” To him it was all about appearance, we quickly realized. Some of the girls that worked there did not even know how to work properly, always on their phone or leaving the work area, but he allowed it. That to me was a red flag that we weren’t there because we worked good because others did not work as hard as I did. In my middle school years and high school years I saw ladies being called a hoes and guys were being called the pimps. It was a statement that has been clear supposedly that it is ok and cool if a guy has more then one girl, but absolutely not ok for the girl to the same. In the world girls can be viewed as objects at times, and taken for granted not really thanked for why we have food in our table or the house clean but as a natural thing for the women to be he head of the house in that aspect. It’s why most women don’t step up and look beyond that point and reach for the stars instead of gazing at the stars. I understand that the poem does take place and time in a different century, perhaps but it doesn’t mean its ok to sit back and let the world go by because your scared of what people may say, or think if you stepped out of the same daily routine. How about you built your own identity instead of letting people choose your path for you. I am an example, I have overcame allot of challenges and put downs because I am a women and witnessed things in my own household but doesn’t mean there right and that I am going to follow the same footsteps because I am NOT and because of my experiences I am the person I am today and want to be more then viewed as a house wife.

english 113A( The Elements and Pleasure)

1)Some examples of poetry is "A better tomorrow" by Yvonne Warren  another poem i have read has been " Because of you" by Starbust.  I think what makes a poem be poetry is when there is message or topic, its more rhythmical, more of a format in rhyme. If i was reading poetry in my class and i was trying to get her to understand what i was doing i would show her a couple different pieces of work of poems.
2) Poetry is popular because there is books that are just made in poems, its how many people express there feelings, emotion, and thoughts. It is something that we read allot in high school. There is different types of poems some rhyme others do not. Theres too many different types of poems.
3)The first poem i read was probably like in middle school and my english teacher gave s a Shakespeare poems. It was so hard to understand , and follow it. When its difficult to understand it just gets me so mad.
4) I remember a time we had to write a big book and everything inside it had to be poems and about different times in my life. It made it easier because i broke it apart to challenges at home , school and with love.
5) I learned that most poems have a meaning to everything and that it is a different way for people to let out there anger or emotions. It can help someone when they need to express them selfs.
6)I have wrote poems a couple of times before in class projects and even just for fun or when i feel i need to express myself. Some have been projects so they have had to grade them and other times when i am proud of a poem i show it to my friends to see what they think.
